Advanced Water Treatment & Nanotechnology

Project Aim

This project promoted research on nanotechnology and other advanced water technologies, and fostered cooperation between the people of the Middle East in order to improve the quality of drinking and irrigation water in the region.

How It Works

The scarcity of water in the Middle East has been a source of friction between countries in the region throughout history. In order to address the depletion of this precious resource and to improve the quality of drinking and irrigation water, the Peres Center served as the umbrella organization for six Israeli universities and research institutes and additional R&D centers in the field of research on water-nanotechnology, overseeing various projects which sought to improve the quality of marginal water, waste water, sea water, and aquifers. From 2003 research focused on Nano-scale solutions to water desalination and groundwater toxins with special emphasis on heavy metals and soil contamination. Recognizing that increased quantities of good quality water need to be developed for the region, the main directions of research activity were: control of the aquifers, remediation of polluted underground and surface waters, production of water by desalination of seawater, brackish and slightly deteriorated water sources and control of domestic and industrial wastewater to reduce environmental hazards. Integration among these available routs of action is the key for a sustainable low-cost water solution for Israel and its neighbors, providing a common platform through which to encourage Arab-Israeli cooperation.
