Young Ambassadors

About the Project

The Young Ambassadors program, a collaboration between the Peres Center for Peace and Israel’s Young Ambassadors school, provides a group of 25 high school students ages 14-16 from Jaffa, Israel, with training in leadership and volunteering skills aiming to improve their self confidence and foster deeper connections to their community and between them and the "other".

Our vision is to encourage youths to become active and engaged in their communities while raising their social awareness, improving their self esteem, and helping them to become leaders in their communities as well as representatives of their communities within Israel and abroad.

Project Aim

Participants are from Jaffa, a mixed city of Jews and Arabs, Christians and Muslims. However, they grow up segregated, rarely interacting with one another and without opportunities or programs facilitating the exploration of self identity while getting to know the "other". To address this, the group is "twinned" with a group of Jewish Israeli students, thus bringing in an important element of peacebuilding between cultures. Students meet with their "twinned" group to practice public speaking and dialogue skills and get to know one another.

Each cycle coincides with the school year and includes 25 two hour meetings. During the meetings, students engage in activities pertaining to issues such as the power of cooperation and teamwork, leadership skills, communication and listening, conflict resolution, social equality, overcoming fears, debate, speech writing, public speaking, diplomacy, and more.

At the end of the cycle, students have the opportunity to go on a diplomatic trip abroad, where they will meet Israeli diplomats based abroad and will have the opportunity to act as Young Ambassadors, representing themselves, their communities, and the values of social cohesion and shared life.
We are currently running the first pilot cycle of this program, and are looking forward to seeing how our participants grow as they learn more about themselves, their communities, and their peers both from within their communities and from their twinned group.
