The Twinned Peace Sports Schools program has reached over 20,000 children and youth, boys and girls, Arabs and Jews, Israelis and Palestinians.

Girls Basketball

Project Aim

This project fosters values of peace and coexistence between young Israeli, Palestinian, Arab and Jewish girls by improving attitudes toward the "other" and diffusing stereotypes using the tool of basketball. The project is often the only opportunity availble for these girls - many from traditional or conservative communities - to participate in sporting activities.

How It Works

Since the project was launched in 2005, girls have participated in bi-weekly basketball training in their communities as well as monthly joint activities with their Israeli and Palestinian counterparts where they play in mixed teams and participate in peace education and inter-language learning activities.

Many of these girls - most from traditional or conservative communities where sporting activities for girls is not seen as a priority - would never otherwise have the opportunity to participate in sport, let alone in activities where they met their Israeli and Palestinian counterparts. Through the program the girls not only get to play a healthy and fun sport that benefits their fitness, self-esteem and teamwork abilities, but by allowing them the opportunity to play with girls from across the border the girls learn to communicate and cooperate with girls from the 'other side'.

This project is supported by Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
