Some recent activities:
-
In May 2008, the Peres Center held a special gathering alongside the President's Conference in Jerusalem, hosted by Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev, former President of the USSR and member of the Peres Center's International Board of Governors. Mr. Gorbachev applauded the Peres Center for focusing on youth, commenting that such age group is vital to nurturing the next generation of peace-makers. He suggested that the Peres Center's cross-border programs "build avenues which will one day be a road to peace and cooperation between the nations". Mr. Gorbachev was followed by President Shimon Peres, who commented on ten years of successful peacebuilding undertaken by the Peres Center. He stated that "peace between peoples is more important than peace among governments" and that "building peace is more important than negotiating peace". President Peres concurred with Mr. Gorbachev's emphasis on youth, saying that if you make friends when you are 5 years old, you can be friends for some 80 years, however when you make friends at the age of 85, you don’t have the same chances of maintaining long-term friendships. Indeed, for President Peres, seeing a Palestinian and an Israeli boy playing football together gives him hope for the region's future. The event was successful in gathering some key friends and supporters of the Peres Center, and updating them in regard to present peacebuilding activities.
