Over 250 Palestinian doctors and medical personnel have completed residencies and fellowships in Israeli hospitals.

Augusta Victoria

Project Aim

Cancer in children is a rare, but devastating, disease. Although it only affects one out of 10,000 children, it is the second most common cause of death among children (after accidents). In the past three decades, substantial progress has been made in the field of Pediatric Hemato-Oncology, and thus, 70-85% of children can be cured.

The population of the West Bank and Gaza stands at approximately 3.5 million people. Based on epidemiological considerations, there should be some 350 new pediatric oncology cases per year, of which approximately half are in the West Bank. This number of cases justified the creation of a dedicated Palestinian pediatric cancer center.

How It Works

This project supported the establishment of a Pediatric Oncology Center for diagnosis and treatment of cancer at the Lutheran hospital in East Jerusalem, the Palestinian  Augusta Victoria Hospital, in collaboration with the Department of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at the Israeli Hadassah hospital. The Palestinian-Israeli cooperation, and more specifically, the sharing of experience and knowledge between Israeli and Palestinian physicians, offers hope to Palestinian children and young adults suffering from cancer, and in particular, blood and lymph cancer.

The initiative focused on the training of Palestinian physicians, radiotherapists, physicists, and dedicated nursing staff. An entire wing at the Augusta Victoria Hospital has been refurbished to include a patient’s ward, outpatient clinics, a pediatric intensive care unit, and consultation and treatment rooms.

The project has been generously supported by the Italian Region of Marche, the San Paolo Foundation of Torino, Italy, the Government of Denmark, the Bank of St. Miniato, and the Ishmael and Isaac Group of Cleveland, USA.
