Tourism for Peace

Project Aim

In both Jewish and Arab cultures hospitality is an important value – welcoming strangers, getting to know people and developing friendships. Tourism as a concept knows no borders, no animosity; it offers positive experiences. The project sought to develop incoming tourism in the region, facilitate border crossings, ease freedom of movement of tourists and advance the professional skills and know-how of travel and hotel staff.

The project utilized the reciprocal relationship between tourism and peace. By strengthening dialogue and ties between the region's tourism industry, peace was promoted through tourism and tourism was promoted through peace.

How It Works

The project comprised a forum of hotel and tourism association representatives from the region who met regularly to develop a regional tourism program. The four-country tour program developed offers cultural experiences, religious pilgrimages to the 'Holy Land' and a wide variety of tourist sites and resorts, indicating respective uniqueness but also emphasizing the cultural similarities that exist between the destinations. By endorsing this vision all participants agree to: 1) work towards easing freedom of movement for easier access to tourists and Palestinian tourism professionals in the area, 2) gather efforts on joint marketing and promotion activities, and 3) facilitate joint professional workshops for top hotel and travel executives in the region.
